MAS-1060 Introduction to Computerized Medical Practice


Credits 3
Explores evolving computer technology, teaches the use of the microcomputer as a medical office productivity tool, and lays the foundations for the development of standard keyboarding dexterity. Becoming fluent in necessary technology applications is integrated into the course and may include such topics as coding, word-processing, use of e-mail, web browsers, databases, and spreadsheets. Specific emphasis will be placed on using a word processor to transcribe the most common types of medical reports used in outpatient medical practices.
Prerequisite(s): Eligibility for EGL-1010, MAT-1130.
Course Outcomes
  1. Identify current and emerging information technologies and their applications.
  2. Compare and contrast the categories of computers including their components and capabilities. 
  3. Define types of computer software (operating systems, utilities, programming languages, and applications) including their uses and evolution.
  4. Utilize productivity software packages, operating systems, and utility programs.
  5. Type with a minimum speed of 40wpm with 98 percent accuracy.
  6. Use the appropriate formats and specialized rules of grammar and pronunciation used in the transcription of medical records.
