MAS-2050 Clinical Procedures II

A clinically trained medical assistant is a necessary part of the healthcare team. Through selected lab activities students explore the responsibilities of the medical assistant in areas of cardiopulmonary testing, venipuncture, geriatrics, nutrition, medication calculation and administration, and Intravenous access. Students will educate patients regarding preparation for various lab tests, distinguish between the major steps involved in point of care testing (POCT) procedures, and identify the procedural steps for obtaining blood specimens for testing. Also, students will define the rationale for quality control procedures in the laboratory, analyze laboratory test results, and define guidelines related to maintaining a safe laboratory environment. Finally, students will perform patient assessment using cardiopulmonary testing and relate common pathophysiology to the associated laboratory tests and values.

Emphasis is placed on patient safety and methods of infection prevention including Standard Precautions, protective personal equipment, and OSHA regulations. Students are required to perform select procedures on each other during college laboratory
Prerequisite(s): MAS-2020 with grade of C or higher completed or concurrent.
3 lab/3 studio.
