NUR-1050 Adaptations and Practices for the Practical Nurse


Credits 8
This course includes the multifaceted approach to health promotion of children and adults with complex health needs. Nursing interventions for the client with complex health problems in the areas of safe and effective care, psychosocial adaptation, and physiological adaptation are included. The nursing role is developed with emphasis on health maintenance, health promotion, and disease prevention. Selected clinical practices in the community and acute care settings allow the student analyze and synthesize valuable skills and knowledge. Content also includes transition into practice issues of the nursing profession, roles of the practical nurse, and NCLEX - PN preparation. This is the culminating experience for the PN Program.
Prerequisite(s): NUR-1000, NUR-1020, NUR-1030, and NUR-1040.
Capstone Course(s): Yes
10 weeks: 6 class/10 clinical (for six weeks)/3.5 lab hours.
Course Outcomes
  1. Examine the Standards of Practice, entry level competencies, and role of the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) as a member of the health care team.
  2. Identify physiologic and psychosocial factors that affect health promotion and provision of safe care for the elderly in multiple settings. 
  3. Evaluate the LPN role in providing care to patients with health alterations in emergency or disaster situations.
  4. Formulate nursing interventions considering principles of patient safety, health promotion, and prevention of complications for patients with cancer.
  5. Establish priorities utilizing the nursing process to manage care of patients with neurological, respiratory, cardiac, liver, endocrine, and renal disorders.  
  6. Identify risk reduction, rehabilitation, and nursing management strategies for patients with connective tissue disorders. 
  7. Examine use of the nursing process in a therapeutic environment in order to provide safe, culturally competent, age appropriate care to patients experiencing mental illness.   
  8. Apply concepts associated with growth and development to the nursing management of pediatric patients and families.
