COM-1090 Interpersonal Communication
Credits 3 This foundational study of human communication takes place in a survey course designed to explore everyday relationships in various settings. This course provides foundational awareness of interpersonal communication and engages in skill-building practices to enhance students’ capabilities. Students learn the basics of interpersonal communication skills and how they affect one’s communication style. Emphasis is placed on communication dynamics and climate and conflict management strategies.

Course Outcomes 1. Examine the foundations of basic interpersonal communication principles and the impact of social media on interpersonal communication
2. Identify components of communication and identity, to include: self-concept, impression management, and self-disclosure
3. Recognize the importance of the perception process
4. Recognize the influence of emotions on communication
5. Identify the impact one’s culture and language have on interpersonal communication
6. Differentiate nonverbal characteristics, types, and their influences on interpersonal communication
7. Explain elements and types of listening
8. Distinguish relationship behaviors in a variety of interpersonal relationship contexts
9. Analyze conflict management strategies in a variety of interpersonal relationship contexts
