BLD-2030 NCCER HVAC Level 3

This course provides the third level of training of the National Center for Construction Education & Research (NCCER) curriculum in HVAC (Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning). Students gain an understanding of the fundamental concepts of hot water, chilled water and steam systems; refrigeration and refrigerant flow systems; and circuits and motors used in HVAC systems. They learn the skills and knowledge used to troubleshoot of compressors, control circuits, motors, cooling, heat pumps, gas heating, oil heating, and HVAC accessories. Additionally, they learn the communication skills required to achieve good customer relations in the HVAC trade. Successful completion of the course earns students the NCCER HVAC Level 3 credential. The NCCER HVAC curriculum is recognized by North American Technician Excellence (NATE), an independent, third-party certification body for HVACR technicians.

Course Outcomes

Explain the fundamental concepts and operating procedures of hot water, chilled water and steam systems.
Identify the types, uses and installation methods of fasteners, hardware and wiring terminations used in HVAC systems.
Demonstrate the operation, installation and testing of control circuits and electric motors used in HVAC systems.
Explain how to troubleshoot and replace a faulty cooling system compressor.
Compare and contrast the operations of heat pumps and cooling systems.
Troubleshoot the operation of gas-fired and oil-fired heating systems and HVAC accessories.
Explain the operation, installation and repair of zoned, ductless and variable refrigerant flow systems and retail refrigeration systems.
Use effective and professional communication skills to achieve good customer relations.
