EGL-1010S Composition I: Expository Writing Credits 3 In this university-parallel freshman English course, students learn the fundamentals of effective writing. Students develop thesis-driven essays with well-organized, coherent, and unified paragraphs. Students also develop an annotated bibliography of sources that summarizes and evaluates research on a given topic. Students then integrate these sources into an APA- or MLA-formatted research paper, focusing on synthesis and analysis. Throughout the course, students apply grammar and usage conventions to effectively communicate with an intended audience.
EGL-1010S is equivalent to EGL-1010 and fulfills the General Education composition I requirement. Prerequisite(s): Determined by placement methods. Course Outcomes - Formulate restricted, unified, and precise thesis statements for thesis-driven essays.
- Organize essay content into introduction, body, and conclusion paragraphs.
- Construct unified, coherent, and well-developed paragraphs with precise topic sentences.
- Apply grammar and usage rules correctly.
- Evaluate library and online resources relevant to a specific topic.
- Synthesize multiple sources into an essay to support its thesis.
- Accurately integrate sources through summary, paraphrase, and direct quotation.
- Properly document sources through in-text parenthetical and end-of-text bibliographic documentation according to MLA or APA in order to avoid plagiarism.
