TED-2090 Communication for Educators



Credits 3
This course explores everyday relationships in educational settings and how to effectively communicate with parents, families, and colleagues. Students will gain an awareness of interpersonal communication and engage in skill building practices to enhance communication in educational settings working with diverse groups of parents, families, and students.  Students learn the basics of interpersonal communication skills and cultural competence and how they impact one’s communication in the classroom. Emphasis is on building effective relationships in school settings to improve educational outcomes. Finally, students will focus on classroom climate and conflict management strategies, including restorative justice. 

This course is intended for those persons who have a bachelor’s degree and are seeking initial teacher certification and for teachers seeking recertification. 
 

Prerequisite(s): Departmental Permission Required

Course Outcomes
 

  1. Identify basic interpersonal communication principles and how these relate to communication in educational settings. 
  2. Discuss the impact culture and language have on interpersonal communication with various educational stakeholders.
  3. Explain the relationship between a positive classroom climate, effective culturally competent communication, and student learning.
  4. Identify effective conflict management strategies in a variety of interpersonal relationship contexts in schools.
  5. Model effective communication strategies for a variety of audiences and settings in a school environment.
