ART-1600 Ceramics I
Credits: 3
In this studio course, students are introduced to ceramics as a creative craft and art form. Students explore clay as a form of three-dimensional expression for both functional and non-functional works of art. Students actively learn the complex cycle of ceramic production; including but not limited to, types of clay, construction of forms, decorating, glazing, and firing. Students create forms in clay through pinch, coil, slab, and wheel-throwing techniques. Students also investigate documentation practices for three-dimensional works of art, history of ceramics, and how to maintain a safe working environment. Additionally, students articulate three-dimensional elements and principles of art and design through verbal and written critiques. Course Outcomes
- Construct functional and non-functional ceramics that implement the elements and principles of 3-dimensional art and design.
- Create forms in clay through pinch, coil, slab, and wheel-throwing techniques.
- Demonstrate the cycle of production of a ceramic work of art that includes design, construction, glazing, and firing of ceramic work.
- Develop skills and safe working habits for a variety of ceramic tools and equipment.
- Execute documentation of a 3-dimensional work of art that meets industry standards.
- Critique subject, form, construction, and content of works of art using formal and conceptual analysis through verbal and written methods.
- Examine art historical ceramic works and their contribution to the practice of ceramics.
