ART-2570 Lettering Typography and Layout

In this studio course, students continue to use publication design principles with an expanded focus on creative lettering, expressive typography, and advanced layout techniques. Students apply the principles of art and design, use grid structures, and implement digital media for the creation of text-driven layouts for print and digital presentation. This course explores the historical movements and design trends that have influenced lettering and typography. Students study letterform anatomy, type classification, and the basic characteristics of typefaces. Students learn about the methods used for designing numerals, type families, and fonts; using digital and traditional art media. Students assemble text-driven compositions that are suitable for a professional design portfolio.


Prerequisite(s): ART-1620 .

Course Outcomes
  1. Implement digital media, principles of art and design, and grid structures for the design of text-driven layouts.
  2. Identify historical movements and design trends that have influenced lettering and typography.
  3. Describe the basic typeface characteristics, letterform anatomy, and typeface classifications.
  4. Demonstrate the methods used for developing type families and fonts. 
  5. Design original numerals and letterforms using traditional art media and digital methods.
  6. Assemble text-driven compositions that are suitable for a professional design portfolio.
