ART-2620 Digital Illustration

In this studio course, students are introduced to the basics of digital illustration. Students explore a range of hardware, software, and processes for converting hand developed drawings into digital renderings. Students develop object or subject oriented imagery that matches industry standards and utilizes the elements and principles of art and design. Emphasis is on using design thinking steps to identify and meet commercial or client-based needs. Students learn the stages of developing a visual solution from concept to final output. They are introduced to historical, cultural, technological, and current influences on illustration, along with ethical standards related to copyright. Students learn about basic file storage, file preparations based on client needs, and file formatting for web or print outputs. Additionally, students articulate formal and conceptual qualities of the artwork using elements and principles of art and design through verbal and written critiques.

  1. Construct original object or subject oriented illustrations using industry relevant hardware, software, and processes for converting hand developed drawings into digital renderings using the elements and principles of art and design
  2. Demonstrate design thinking steps to meet commercial or client-based needs
  3. Identify historical, cultural, technological, and current influences on illustration
  4. Apply ethical standards of copyright to illustrations
  5. Demonstrate the stages of developing a visual solution concept to final output
  6. Demonstrate proficiency in basic file storage, file preparations based on client needs, and file formatting for web or print outputs
  7. Critique works of art using formal and conceptual analysis using elements and principles of art and design through verbal and written methods
