INT-1010 Introduction to Information Technology



Credits: 3
This class is a survey course in evolving information technology and its relevance to individuals and society. In this course, students explore the fundamental components of computer information systems, including hardware, software, data, procedures, and people. Students gain an understanding of how these elements interact to perform essential functions. Additionally, students learn about the information processing cycle, covering input, processing, output, and storage, and how these processes work together to manage and manipulate data effectively. Emphasis in this course is on giving students a foundation in data analysis and programming. Students also evaluate ethical principles related to privacy, security, intellectual property and how these apply to their academic and professional life. They explore strategies to manage risks related to systems security threats. Lastly, students learn about the basic principles of connectivity and data communications.

Students possessing skills and knowledge in this area may receive credit for INT-1010 by passing the three Internet and Computing Core professional certification exams to earn the IC3 Digital Literacy Master Certification or by taking the exam and earning the CompTIA IT Fundamentals professional certification. Students who wish to take the exam should contact the Technology, Engineering, and Construction department. Students who are already certified may receive credit for INT-1010 by presenting their certificate to the transfer coordinator in the Office of Records and Registration.

Note: Notes: Continuing Education offers a review course for the IC3 exams (DPR-910) as well as free pre-registration for either MOS or IC3 exams (DPR-911) at the college.

Using a Personal Computer, to get the necessary prerequisite skills. All students take a screening test during their first class in INT-1010. Results are used to advise students regarding which course to take.

Students must enroll in INT-1010 within the first 18 credits of college-level courses unless their program of study is exempted from the INT requirement.
