SOC-1010 Introduction to Sociology



Credits: 3
This course is a survey course that acquaints students with the major sociological paradigms and concepts specific to the sociology discipline. Additionally, students examine human behavior within social, economic, and cultural systems and structures via the lenses of the major sociological paradigms and concepts. Students also compare and contrast research methods and data analyses to ethically study human behavior and social phenomena occurring within social institutions and systems. Students learn how cultural norms, values, notions of deviance, and societal inequities are transmitted and perpetuated within the context of social institutions such as the family, education, and the media. Lastly, students examine the relationships between and among education inequities, local economies, and globalization.

Course Outcomes
  1. Analyze social phenomena using data, sociological concepts, theories, and theoretical perspectives to study human behavior. 
  2. Identify methods for sociological research along with their benefits and drawbacks. 
  3. Explore the significance of culture and its impact on socialization, behavior, social institutions, and social structures. 
  4. Explain how systems of social inequality, including racism, sexism, and classism, affect the human experience.
  5. Apply ethical principles inherent in research, teaching, and practices in the field of sociology.
