BLD-2310 NCCER Carpentry Level 1



Credits: 7
This course provides the first level of training of the National Center for Construction Education & Research (NCCER) curriculum in carpentry. Students gain an understanding of the carpentry profession and the role of a carpenter in construction. They learn how to interpret drawings and to use tools, adhesives and fasteners specific to the trade. They acquire the skills and knowledge required to assemble doors, windows, floor, wall, roof, ceiling and stair systems. Successful completion of the course earns students the NCCER Carpentry Level 1 credential.

This course is cross-listed with the following Continuing Education courses: CRP 301: Carpentry: Level 1, Part 1 AND CRP 302: Carpentry: Level 1, Part 2 AND CRP 307: Carpentry: Level 1, Part 3.

Course Outcomes

  1. Discuss the role and career path of the carpenter in construction.
  2. Demonstrate the proper use, handling, storage and installation of various building materials, fasteners and adhesives in carpentry.
  3. Demonstrate the safe and proper use of specialized hand and power tools in carpentry. 
  4. Interpret construction plans, details and schedules for use in carpentry.
  5. Assemble floor, ceiling, roof and wall systems.
  6. Estimate the materials required to frame floors, ceilings, roof and wall systems.
  7. Install doors, windows and locksets.
  8. Create a basic stair layout.
