CJT-2510 Criminal Law



Credits: 3
A study of substantive criminal law, including elements of state and federal crimes.  Constitutional limitations on the types of conduct that can be criminalized, affirmative defenses to criminal liability, appropriate criminal statutes and interpretive court decisions will be examined.

Course Outcomes
  1. Identify the purposes of American criminal law and punishment.
  2. Distinguish among the federal, state, trial and appellate courts involved in criminal cases.
  3. Evaluate specific affirmative and Constitution-based defenses to crimes.
  4. Analyze misdemeanor and felony crimes in terms of their actus reas and mens rea elements.
