EGL-1100 Composition II: Writing About Issues and Ideas



Credits: 3
This second-semester composition course is a continuation and extension of the rhetorical principles and composition skills addressed in EGL-1010. This course is intended for students in a variety of majors including but not limited to psychology, political science, social sciences, criminal justice, journalism, government, or law. Students analyze, evaluate, and construct persuasive arguments about current issues in American society. Additionally, students summarize and assess arguments for sound reasoning and evidence, identify rhetorical appeals and fallacies, and develop well-supported claims across various argument types. Lastly, students integrate researched material, using MLA or APA format, when writing clear, well-organized essays with strong thesis statements and logical development.

Prerequisite(s): EGL-1010 with a grade of C or higher

Course Outcomes
  1. Summarize an argument, including its principal claim and reasons.
  2. Evaluate the soundness of the evidence and reasons supporting an argument, including identifying rhetorical appeals and fallacies in reasoning.
  3. Develop clearly defined claims for various types of arguments (such as definition, causal, resemblance, evaluation/value, and proposal/policy arguments).
  4. Support an argument with sound evidence and reasons.
  5. Integrate researched material appropriately, using a standard documentation format (such as MLA or APA).
  6. Develop persuasive written essays demonstrating the abilities listed above that show evidence of logical organizational, stylistic, and grammatical choices.
