PSY-2080 Abnormal Psychology

Focus on human behaviors and mental experiences that are unusual, unreasonable, and distinct from cultural norms. Appropriate psychotherapeutic interventions as well as changing views of mental disorders are considered.

Prerequisite(s): PSY-1010.

Course Outcomes

Apply the concepts and major theoretical perspectives, and empirical studies in abnormal psychology including the psychodynamic, behavioral, cognitive, social and humanistic perspectives, cognitive and humanistic perspectives.
Evaluate research methods used in the study of abnormal psychology.
Distinguish differences between psychotherapy approaches in terms of their success, social value and cultural diversity.
Explain the cultural issues and prevalence of mental disorders across the lifespan.
Describe the classification system for the DSM and identify the appropriate criteria for each major mental disorder.
Evaluate ethical and legislative considerations in the diagnosis and treatment of abnormal behavior.
Evaluate current multicultural issues in community mental health that impact ethnic minority communities.
Use appropriate technology to obtain scholarly information for the purpose of writing or making presentations on relevant abnormal psychology topics.
