PSY-2130 Forensic Psychology

This course introduces concepts that unite psychology and the law and reviews statutes governing competency, insanity, and involuntary commitment. Students will become acquainted with forensic assessment techniques, including the interview process, specialized training, and the collection of collateral information. Also considered are the assessments of competency to stand trial, criminal responsibility, and dangerousness. Pre-sentencing and child custody evaluations are discussed as well.

Prerequisite(s): PSY-1010.

Course Outcomes

Explain the American Legal System and its historical and present-day relationship with the field of psychology
Explain the concepts and major theories of forensic psychology.
Apply appropriate technology to obtain scholarly information for the purpose of writing or making presentations on current topics in forensic psychology.
Evaluate psychological tests and other forensic tools used in criminal and civil cases.
Compare and contrast the definition of criminal behavior in other cultures.
Evaluate ethical principles involved in the legal system, i.e., civil rights, privacy.
