RST-1570 Principles of Cardiopulmonary Physiology

Credits: 4
Anatomy and physiology of the cardiopulmonary system with emphasis on developing very precise and in-depth understanding of ventilation-perfusion, oxygen and carbon dioxide transport, acid-base balance, and chemical control of breathing.

Prerequisite(s): Admission to RST program and completion of BIO-2050 BIO-2060 , EGL-1010 , CHM-1010 , and MAT-1250  with grade of C or higher.

Corequisite(s): RST-1531 .

Course Outcomes
  1. List the anatomical structures that make up the upper and lower airways.
  2. Compare/contrast the structural differences between bronchi and bronchioles.
  3. Identify the pressure and flow changes associated with the mechanics of the breathing.
  4. Differentiate between the blood flow and ventilation zones of the lungs.
  5. Identify the elements involved in the transport of carbon dioxide and oxygen in the body.
  6. Calculate resistance, compliance, dead space, and oxygenation indicators.
  7. Interpret the results for resistance, compliance, dead space, and oxygenation formulas.
  8. Identify the neural control centers and respiratory chemoreceptors for breathing.
  9. Interpret acid-base disturbances.
