RST-2490 Neonatal and Pediatric Respiratory Care

Designed to prepare students with theoretical understanding of fetal cardiopulmonary development, disease states specific to neonatal and pediatric patients as well as implementation of physical assessment and adaptation of respiratory care modalities to meet the needs of these unique groups of critically ill patients. Preparation for student entry into the neonatal/pediatric critical care clinical rotation.

Prerequisite(s): RST-1730 with grade of C or higher.

Corequisite(s): RST-2500 and RST-2530.

Course Outcomes

List the characteristics associated with the stages of fetal development.
Differentiate between the anatomical circulation of the fetus and that of the newborn.
Evaluate the respiratory status of the newborn.
Perform neonatal cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Choose the treatment intervention to deliver oxygen therapy, broncho-pulmonary hygiene, and respiratory medication.
Differentiate between the indications for non-invasive versus invasive ventilation of neonatal patients.
Select ventilator changes for the correction of oxygenation and ventilation abnormalities.
Define specific neonatal/pediatric respiratory diseases.
