SOC-2090 Sociology of Minorities

In this course, students examine the experiences of racial and ethnic minorities through a sociological lens. Students analyze the establishment, maintenance, and breakdown of dominant processes between and among majority and minority groups, including the practices, policies, and institutions that perpetuate such processes. The origins of race and ethnicity are also explored. Additionally, students use a variety of electronic resources to examine data and historical trends, including social, economic, educational, and political experiences of racial and ethnic minorities nationally, and to an extent, globally. Lastly, students discuss privilege, oppression, marginalization, and intersectionality to refine their understanding of majority/minority relations.

Prerequisite(s): ANT-1030, POS-1010, SOC-1010, or PSY-1010.

Course Outcomes

Explain the concept of race and ethnicity along with other key sociological concepts and theories to understand race, ethnicity, and majority/minority relations.
Analyze how racial and ethnic stratification originated and are reproduced through social institutions, policies, and practices.
Explain the experiences of racial and ethnic groups in the United States and in selected global examples.
Use information literacy and technology to access and interpret data and scholarly research/literature to complete research as it applies to racial and ethnic minorities in a sociological context.
