HNV-2540 Public Health Preparedness

This course provides an overview of the foundations of public health preparedness and response using an all-hazards approach.  Students examine the local, state, and federal laws and regulations related to public health preparedness as well as the roles, responsibilities, functions, and tasks of the public health practitioners involved in public health preparedness. Additionally, students analyze the epidemiology of disease outbreaks and nuclear, biological, chemical, and natural disasters.  Lastly, students evaluate the preparedness cycle of critical events.

Prerequisite(s): SOC-2400, HNV-2520, and HNV-2530 all with a grade of C or higher.

Course Outcomes

Identify the foundations of public health preparedness to include current definitions, threats and hazards, frameworks and infrastructure, and emergency management.
Examine public health preparedness laws and regulations.
Discuss the roles, responsibilities, functions and tasks associated with public health practitioners.
Discuss effective public health preparedness at the local, state and federal levels.
Evaluate the preparedness cycle of a critical event.
Analyze the epidemiology of disease outbreak and nuclear, biological, chemical and natural disasters.
