EAP-1100 Reading Academic Texts for Analysis

Credits: 3
EAP-1100 is the third and final reading course in the English for Academic Purposes reading/writing series. In this course, students develop analytical reading skills for academic texts that contain prose and non-prose components such as photographs, charts, and graphs. Students develop analytical reading skills by identifying main ideas in academic passages at the college level. Additionally, students use context and text markers to make inferences to define unfamiliar words and determine the author’s purpose and tone. Students learn to articulate inferences and use target vocabulary through restatements and other reading response passages. Students also practice skimming and scanning text for information. Finally, students outline academic texts and write paragraph summaries with correct citations of the source material.

This course is intended for students who are non-native speakers of American English and who did not complete all four years of high school in the United States.
