Database Administration Certificate

Program Description

The Database Administration Certificate is designed for students with an interest in databases. The certificate in database administration provides students with a thorough theoretical and practical background in database concepts, languages and development with a specialization in database and design. The certificate includes robust hands-on learning through innovative lab courses focused on database administration and development as well as debugging of software.  Some of the credits earned in the Database Administration Certificate can be applied to the Information Technology Associate in Science (A.S) or Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degrees. Additionally, there are also job opportunities for those looking to enter the software development industry with this certificate.

Program Outcomes

Graduates of the Database Administration Certificate will be able to:

1. Apply fundamental information technology concepts in order to use database management tools.
2. Install database management software.
3. Design database objects using SQL and PL/SQL.
4. Analyze a computer information system.
5. Troubleshoot database-related issues.
6. Utilize database concepts in the information technology environment.

Sequence of Study

Required Courses (in expected order)

• INT-1010 Introduction to Information Technology Credits: 3 (Program Requirement)
• INT-1111 Programming Logic and Design Credits: 3 (Program Requirement; Critical Course)
• INT-1700 Understanding Operating Systems Credits: 3 (Program Requirement; Critical Course)
• INT-2080 Fundamentals of Database Management Credits: 3 (Program Requirement; Critical Course)
• INT-2081 Introduction to Oracle Credits: 3 (Program Requirement; Critical Course)
• INT-2082 Advanced Oracle and PL/SQL Credits: 3 (Program Requirement; Critical Course)

• 
  Take one of the following program electives:

• INT-1550 Introduction to Networks- Network Plus Prep Credits: 3 (Program Elective) or
• INT-2140 Problem Solving with Spreadsheets Credits: 3 (Program Elective) or
• INT-2200 Programming in Java Credits: 3 (Program Elective) or
• INT-2030 Introduction to Visual Basic Credits: 3 (Program Elective) or
• INT-2130 Programming in C++ Credits: 3 (Program Elective)

Program Total: 21 Credits

Transferability

Credit earned at any public institution in the state shall be transferable to any other institution if the:

• Credit is from a college or university parallel course or program;
• Grades in the block of courses transferred average 2.00 or higher; and
• Acceptance of the credit is consistent with the policies of the receiving institution governing students following the  same program. Refer to ARTSYS at artweb.usmd.edu and the receiving institution’s catalog to select transferable courses.
