Program Description


The Associate of Arts in Art prepares students for a career in the creative economy and for transfer to a bachelor’s degree program in art. Required courses in the  program  focus on visual literacy, digital literacy, color theory, 2D & 3D design, visual perspective, formal and conceptual analysis, and contextualization of art. Students are encouraged to explore traditional studio media and/or digital media. They are introduced to theories, history and practices associated with the arts that stress critical thinking, problem solving, and professional practices The program provides opportunities for the development of an understanding and appreciation of how art impacts and enriches their everyday lives and their community.  Students have the option to select elective courses that align with four tracks of the creative economy: commercial art, arts organization/management, arts teaching, and studio art. Students complete the program by developing a competitive portfolio for entry into workforce or for transfer. 

Program Outcomes


Graduates of the Art, A.A. will be able to:

  • Identify the basic components of visual literacy through the elements and principles of art, design, and color     
  • Compose original two-dimensional, three-dimensional, or four-dimensional works of art using various conceptual and perceptual sources
  • Create art and design using traditional and/or digital materials, media, techniques, and equipment that utilize elements and principles of art, design, and color
  • Evaluate works of art using formal and conceptual analysis
  • Explain the significance of art within historical, cultural, social, and economic contexts

Sequence of Study


Below are the required courses for your program arranged in a suggested sequence. Please note that the sequence does not include developmental coursework. See Academic Preparation  for the developmental course sequence if applicable to you.

Transferability


Credit earned at any public institution in the state shall be transferable to any other institution if the:

  • Credit is from a college or university parallel course or program;
  • Grades in the block of courses transferred average 2.00 or higher; and
  • Acceptance of the credit is consistent with the policies of the receiving institution governing students following the  same program. Refer to ARTSYS at artweb.usmd.edu and the receiving institution’s catalog to select transferable courses.
