THE-2080 Stage Scenery Construction

THE 2080 provides a reinforcement to the essential techniques required of a stage carpenter, familiarity with scene shop equipment and tools, materials, hardware, joinery, layout and construction of scenery are emphasized. Further explorationsin the skills within this specialized area of Theatre and Entertainment Technology are undertaken to begin establishing a professional canon. Students enrolled in this course are expected to be at a progressive level of competency. This course consists of a lecture component (2 hour each week) and a laboratory session (4 hours each week). Students enrolled in this course are required to attend the live theatre performance(s) listed in the syllabus outside of scheduled class time. This experience is vital to understanding and learning about the performing arts and is tied directly to significant assignments in this class. Students enrolled in this course will be required to participate in a culminating performance to demonstrate proficiency in the course outcomes. Therefore, students will be required to attend production hours outside of scheduled class time during the final exam period to attend a technical rehearsal, final dress rehearsal, and performance. The specific requirements and details regarding the live theatre performance(s) and culminating performance are outlined in the syllabus. Students should pay special attention to these requirements.
Prerequisite(s): THE-1150   or THE-1040   completed with a C or higher.  Concurrent enrollment in THE 1150 or THE 1040, or with permission of the Department of Humanities.
2 class/4 lab hours.

Course Outcomes
  1. Apply the principles of personal protection equipment and on the job safety basics
  2. Apply basic scenic studio woodworking principles
  3. Demonstrate basic welding technique
  4. Use plastics in scenery construction 
  5. Use fasteners and scenery hardware.
  6. Construct stock scenery, platforms and stairs
