EGL-2270 Applied Grammar

Analysis of grammar, syntax, the history of the English language, and conventional usage. Application of principles through editing texts, constructing teaching units, and/or writing research papers.

Prerequisite(s): EGL-1010 and EGL-1020 or EGL-1100 or EGL-1320 or EGL-1340, with a grade of C or higher.

Course Outcomes

Analyze the impact of key events and developments in the history of conventional English usage.
Evaluate current models of grammar and syntax in light of their usefulness to writing.
Analyze grammar patterns in light of their usefulness for specific writing tasks.
Apply the principles of standard grammar and usage to editing texts for errors in rhetoric, syntax, case, tense, punctuation, and so forth.
Design activities for presentation to the class, using principles of grammar and usage.
Research a current grammar controversy and a best solution.
