BIO-1250 Biology of Aging

Lecture/seminar course designed for major or non-major students. Examines the aging process on the molecular, cellular, organismic levels. Emphasizes alterations during the aging process in cells. Examination of various pathological disorders in relationship to aging is also emphasized. Students are required to read original articles and be prepared to discuss current topics in workshop settings.

Course Outcomes

Describe the effects of aging on several body systems. Identify and explain the significance of several human “aging” diseases and what they tell us about human aging.
Explain how genetics and mutations might contribute to human aging.
Explain how nutrition might contribute to human aging. Demonstrate knowledge of where to go to continue to read about and utilize in practical ways the continuing flow of new scientific knowledge about aging.
Student will be able to cite, explain and analyze presented case studies using emerging scientific information.
Demonstrate an understanding of the effects of an aging population on public policy and health care.
