BIO-2010 Microbiology Credits 4 Structure and function of microorganisms and their roles in pathology. Laboratory includes culture methods, staining, and identification of bacteria. Prerequisite(s): BIO-1010, BIO-1050, BIO-1140, or BIO-2050. DVM-0071 completed or appropriate score on math placement test. 2 class/4 lab hours. Course Outcomes
- Differentiate structural and molecular characteristics of represented pathogenic and non-pathogenic microorganisms in the Bacteria and Eukaryota Domains, including their evolution and survival strategies, as well as the human cellular responses to these adaptations.
- Compare and contrast microbial nutrition needs and metabolism, including aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms.
- Analyze experimental strategies used to detect and prevent human infections.
- Demonstrate proper use of a compound light microscope, including the 100X oil immersion lens to identify the genus and species nomenclature of represented microorganisms, including Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
- Demonstrate appropriate aseptic laboratory techniques, including transferring bacteria from contaminated into sterile media, pouring agar plates without introducing contaminating organisms, sterilizing laboratory surfaces to prevent infection, and disposing of contaminated media.
- Use proper bacteria specific identification techniques, including morphological staining and biochemical media analyses to identify genus and species from unknown (to the students) bacteria samples.
- Evaluate clinical and environmental techniques used to remediate pathogenic contaminating populations.
