EGL-1010P Composition I: Expository Writing (ALP)


Credits 3
Special section of university-parallel freshman English. Fundamentals of effective prose writing, including research-based informative, analytical, and argumentative essays. Course is offered to Accelerated Learning Program (ALP) students only; students in EGL-1010P must be enrolled in the linked section of EGL-0100P . This class is equivalent to EGL-1010 .
Fulfills the General Education Composition I requirement.
Prerequisite(s): To be eligible for ALP, students must earn a combined score of 148-168 on the Accuplacer test. ALP eligibility may also be determined by a grade of C in EGL-0080 or EGL-0090.
Corequisite(s): Students enrolled in EGL-1010P must be concurrently enrolled in EGL-0100P.
Formerly EGL-1011.
Course Outcomes
  1. Formulate restricted, unified, and precise thesis statements for thesis-driven essays. 
  2. Organize essay content into introduction, body, and conclusion paragraphs.
  3. Construct unified, coherent, and well-developed paragraphs with precise topic sentences.
  4. Apply grammar and usage rules correctly.
  5. Evaluate library and online resources relevant to a specific topic.
  6. Synthesize multiple sources into an essay to support its thesis.
  7. Accurately integrate sources through summary, paraphrase, and direct quotation.
  8. Properly document sources through in-text parenthetical and end-of-text bibliographic documentation according to MLA or APA in order to avoid plagiarism.
