  1. Discuss the foundation and evolution of the American republic from the early national period to the Age of Jackson.
  2. Describe how expansionism and sectionalism in the antebellum United States divided the nation and led to the Civil War.
  3. Analyze primary sources in their historical context.
  4. Identify basic historical arguments in secondary sources.
  5. Construct justifiable historical arguments based on evidence from primary and secondary sources.
