HUS-2200 Developmental Disabilities

This course identifies the characteristics and causes of various developmental disabilities. Topics include the history of service provision, human rights, legislation and litigation, advocacy, and accessing support services. Upon completion, students should be able to identify current and historical developmental disability definitions and support systems used throughout the life span.
Prerequisite(s): HUS-1010.
Course Outcomes

Identify techniques for working with people with developmental disabilities
Analyze historical and current attitudes and beliefs about individuals with functional and developmental disabilities
Identify the physical, social, legal, economic, and ethical issues occurring throughout the life span of individuals with developmental disabilities
Explain the tenets of self-determination and self-advocacy and the impact on the lives of individuals with developmental disabilities and their families
Analyze the symptoms and characteristics of specific functional and developmental disabilities
