NUR-2031 Psychosocial Integrity

Psychosocial Integrity emphasizes biopsychosocial aspects and early detection of mental health problems related to psychosocial adaptation throughout the life span.  In this course, students learn theories related to therapeutic communication, growth and development, and Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.  Focus is on promoting safety and wellness through evidence-based practice, incorporating current research.  Students use a variety of tools to measure clients’ symptoms with behavioral and psychiatric disorders.  Students learn how to manage the care of clients with a psychiatric mental health disorder, using therapeutic communication, keeping a safe client environment, and prioritizing client needs.  Additionally, students explore psychopathology, pharmacological therapies, as well as legal and ethical practices in mental health nursing.  Lastly, students examine how spirituality and cultural diversity affect client care.
Prerequisite(s): NUR-2010 , NUR-2020 .
Corequisite(s): NUR-2032 , NUR-2040 .
1.5 class/5 clinical (for 9 weeks)/1.5 lab hours.
Course Outcomes
 

  1. Apply concepts related to the role of the nurse and use of the nursing process in behavioral and psychiatric/mental health nursing. 
  2. Evaluate nursing management of clients experiencing anxiety disorders, suicidal ideation, thoughts of harming self and others.
  3. Implement nursing priorities of care for clients with mood disorders, schizophrenia, and other psychotic disorders.
  4. Formulate a plan of care for clients with neurocognitive disorders.
  5. Analyze the effects of substance use disorders on clients, families, and the community.
  6. Formulate nursing interventions considering principles of client safety, health promotion, and health maintenance for clients with eating disorders, personality disorders, and disorders of children.
