PMD-1000 Introduction to Paramedicine and Medical Emergencies Credits 4 Introduces the paramedic student to the roles and responsibilities central to the delivery of emergency pre-hospital advanced life support-level care. Includes paramedic and technical report writing, laws governing practice, psychosocial issues and ethical considerations and aspects of the pre-hospital EMT systems and emergency field communications. Provides knowledge and skills essential to advanced life support care of patients with medical emergencies. Covers cardiovascular, respiratory, nervous system, endocrinology, allergies-anaphylaxis, gastroenterology, urinary/nephrology, and hematology as a physiologic base for assessment and intervention. Prerequisite(s): Program admission Corequisite(s): PMD-1010, PMD-1020, and PMD-1050 3 class/3 lab hours. Course Outcomes
- Identify the historic milestones and components of EMS systems, and the roles and responsibilities of a paramedic within these EMS systems, with respect to patient care, as prescribed in the current paramedic national education standards.
- Identify the principles and elements of therapeutic communication, medical consultation, and documentation relevant to the prehospital emergency environment, as prescribed in the current paramedic national education standards.
- Identify the elements and principles of history taking and techniques of physical exam relevant to a medical emergency, as prescribed in the current paramedic national education standards.
- Identify the anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology of the major body systems relevant to a medical emergency, as prescribed in the current paramedic national education standards.
- Identify methods and elements of assessment and management of a medical emergency, including the pathophysiological significance of the assessment findings, as prescribed in the current paramedic national education standards.
