PSC-1010 Introduction to Astronomy Credits 3 In this course, students explore the foundations of astronomy. Students examine how the solar system, galaxy, and universe have been perceived throughout history and explore the tools and methods astronomers use. Students investigate the origin, components, and evolution of the solar system (including the planets, moons, and the sun), stars, galaxies, and the universe as a whole. This course fulfills a general education requirement for non-science majors.
Honors version available. Prerequisite(s): Reading Readiness . Course Outcomes
- Analyze the scientific method and how it has been used in astronomy.
- Evaluate historical development of models of the solar system and universe and the achievements which have led to our modern perceptions.
- Appraise the tools and methods which astronomers use, and the ways in which astronomical information is obtained, including the nature and properties of light.
- Interpret the uniform processes that the worlds of the solar system undergo.
- Analyze mechanisms of stellar astronomy, especially stellar evolution.
- Identify aspects of galactic astronomy and the extrastellar environment.
- Analyze our current models of the birth and evolution of the universe and solar system.
