PHY-1020 Introductory Physics II

Credits 4
Fundamental concepts of vibration and sound, electricity and magnetism, optics, and modern physics.
Prerequisite(s): PHY-1010.
3 class/1 rec/2 lab hours.
Course Outcomes
  1. Explain the terminology, symbols, dimensions, and units for physical quantities in sound, optics, electricity, magnetism, and modern physics.
  2. Use the concepts of oscillations, waves, sound and light waves, the Doppler effect, musical instruments to solve related problems.
  3. Apply the concepts the laws of refraction, reflection, interference, diffraction of light, to solve related problems (e.g., the power of prescription lens for various eye defects).
  4. Solve for the electric forces, fields, and potentials for various charge distributions.
  5. Solve for magnetic fields for a variety of sources (e.g., solenoid used for MRI).
  6. Explain the concepts related to the atomic and nuclear structures, radioactive decay, and probabilistic nature of quantum mechanics.
  7. Investigate the behavior of physical systems in the lab and report any discrepancy between the experimental behavior/results and the expected behavior/results.
