POS-1010 American National Government


Credits 3
A study of the Constitution and the American political system, including how power and authority are acquired and applied. Emphasis will be placed on the Congress, the Presidency, and the Supreme Court, as well as on voting dynamics, political parties, interest groups, public opinion, and the media.
Course Outcomes
  1. Formulate accurate definitions of essential concepts necessary to understand American government and politics.
  2. Describe the interrelated national and state structures of government, based upon the Constitution, that are known as separation of powers and federalism.
  3. Analyze the basic American civil liberties found in the Bill of Rights and in other Constitutional amendments.
  4. Analyze important powers and duties of the Congress, President, and the Judiciary in the Constitutional system of checks and balances.
