SOC-2020 Marriage and Family


Credits 3
Survey of modern marriage and family issues and related sociological trends in America.  Applying macro- and micro-level sociological theories, marriage and intimate relationships are discussed from a historical perspective. The impact of sociological trends and contemporary phenomena on marriage are examined.  Additionally, students are tasked with conducting research on issues and topics related to marriage in the context of the sociology discipline.
Prerequisite(s): SOC-1010, PSY-1010, or ANT-1030.
Formerly (Formerly SOC-1020. Students may not receive credit for both SOC-1020 and SOC-2020.)
Course Outcomes
1. Apply sociological theories in exploring family function and family stability/instability from an historical perspective.

2. Apply sociological concepts of the family to professional, personal, social and organizational issues.          

3. Use critical thinking in inormation literacy to access and interpret data on families and intimate relationships.

4, Interpret the impact of technology on marriage and family, and other intimate relationships.

5. Compare the institution of the family and intimate relationships cross culturally.

6. Apply the ethical principles in research to conduct research specific to the family and intimate relationships.

7. Evaluate research methods and tools used by sociologists to understand and explain findings that address contemporary issues in intimate relationship, marriage and family.
