COM-1010 Foundations of Communication


Credits 3
This survey course provides a foundation for the study of communication competency and skills.  In this course, students explore basic communication skills across a variety of contexts, and with diverse audiences. Emphasis is placed upon the foundation and characteristics of communication and public speaking.  Students learn how to use basic intrapersonal and interpersonal communication, along with listening skills to identify self-concept, perception, and identity management.  Students will increase their communication competence by enhancing their listening skills and the uses of verbal and nonverbal communication.  Students will discover how one’s culture impacts communication.   Students learn the public speaking process, from topic creation, outline and message development, to delivery of an effective informative and persuasive presentation.

Course Outcomes
  1. Explain concepts of, types of, and misconceptions about communication
  2. Differentiate between an individual’s view of oneself (Self-Concept), an individual’s view of the world (Perception), and an individual’s public image (Identity Management)
  3. Identify the impact Culture has on Communication (In-Group Out-Group, High Context and Low Context, Cultural Values and Norms)
  4. Distinguish verbal and nonverbal communication skills in a variety of communication settings
  5. Explain the importance of listening, types of listening, and the listening process
  6. Differentiate Interpersonal Communication in a variety of settings (Personal Relationships, Online, and Workplace)
  7. Assess message development and organizational skills in public speaking
  8. Execute a basic informative speech on the arts
  9. Execute a basic persuasive speech
