SGT-1010 Introduction to Surgical Technology

SGT-1010 is an introduction to basic surgical instrumentation along with specific nomenclature (names) and classification related to surgical procedures. Concepts of sterilization and disinfection and their effects on wound healing are included. The care, use, and handling of instrumentation and suture material are provided through hands-on application. In addition to a thorough introduction on instrumentation, students will also receive a basic foundation in surgical technology. The course will include the history of surgical technology, safety measures and the surgical environment and aseptic technique, and legal, moral, and ethical responsibilities. This course will also provide introduction to robotics, computer skills, electrosurgery and electricity.  
Prerequisite(s): Program admission; eligibility for EGL-1010 and MAT-1250
2 lecture/3 lab hours.
Course Outcomes
  1. Apply the meaning of surgical conscience and aseptic technique in the surgical environment.
  2. Identify different types of health care facilities, organizational structures, and departments. 
  3. Identify the professional organizations Association of Surgical Technology, Accreditation Review Council on Education in Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting, and the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting.
  4. Interpret the legal responsibilities of the surgical technologist and other team members taking into consideration the concepts of law, ethics, and risk management. 
  5. Identify the physical, spiritual, and psychological needs of the patient including Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.
  6. List intraoperative considerations for special populations.
  7. Analyze the role of the surgical technologist in the protection of self, patients, and others from hazards in the operating room to include the physical environment and safety standards.
  8. Name the concepts of biomedical science.
  9. Identify components of a computer system including word processing, internet, and email functions. 
  10. Demonstrate appropriate attire for the lab/clinical setting. 
  11. Identify the principles and procedures related to sterilization and disinfection which includes personal protective equipment. 
  12. Demonstrate scrubbing, gowning, and gloving.
  13. Demonstrate loading/unloading the blade and suture.
