SGT-1030 Surgical Procedures I Credits 4 This course will provide the student with detailed instruction in a variety of subjects related to surgical technology including wound care, aseptic technique, pharmacology, and surgical case management. In order to understand surgical procedures, the student must be able to explore specific clinical conditions, signs, and symptoms leading up to surgery including emergency situations. At the conclusion of SGT-1030, the student will be able to identify anatomy and related pathology for various specialties. Specialties to be covered shall include but are not limited to gynecology, general cases, and diagnostic procedures. Prerequisite(s): SGT-1010 3 lecture/1 lab hours. Course Outcomes
- Identify emergency situations, hazard preparation, hemostasis, and appropriate agents and devices.
- Identify drug solutions and proportions to include the action of the drugs and their classification.
- Identify the different instrumentation, equipment, and supplies in an OR setting to include basic instrumentation by name, type, function, and assembly.
- Define the classifications of surgical wound healing and the factors that influence healing including sutures and stapling devices.
- Analyze the role of the surgical technologist to include opening techniques, instrument preparation and supplies, transportation, and positioning.
- Compare and contrast techniques used to establish diagnosis and related indications for surgical interventions.
- Identify anatomy and physiology pertaining to appropriate diagnostic examinations.
- Identify related terminology and pathology of each organ system that indicates surgical intervention.
- List names and uses of general surgery to include knowledge of surgical procedures and surgical case management.
- Perform duties in the role of first scrub to include application of surgical conscience during advanced and specialized surgical procedures.
