TED-1100 Principles and Practices in Early Childhood Education Credits 3 In this course, students learn the roles and responsibilities of the early childhood education professional. Students explore both the history and current practices of early childhood education, including legislation in the field. Students learn what are developmentally appropriate practices and examine the theoretical foundation and components of a variety of curricular modals and programs in-depth. A part of this course focuses on specifics of early childhood education in Maryland, such as approved curriculum in the state. Additionally, students explore a variety of assessment tools used with young children in various programs. Prerequisite(s): Reading Readiness . Formerly ECE-1050. Course Outcomes
- Identify the major roles and responsibilities of an early childhood educator.
- Discuss the Early Childhood Professional Code of Ethics (NAEYC) and other ethical documents and their implications for practice.
- Explain the historical and philosophical roots of early childhood education.
- Explain the educational goals of quality early childhood education programs and how they are carried out in practice.
- Compare and contrast the variety of curriculum models and programs in early childhood education.
- Identify significant issues and current trends, including legislation, pertaining to the profession.
- Examine historical changes in the adult view of the role of the education of young children in society, and the current implications for programs and policies in the field.
- Identify the different types of appropriate assessments that are used with young children, and how the major types of programs use these assessments.
