TED-1200 Child Growth and Development

An introduction to the growth and development of children and adolescents. Emphasis is on physical, cognitive, and socio-emotional aspects of child development and techniques to foster optimum physical, cognitive, and socio-emotional development in educational settings.
Prerequisite(s): Reading Readiness 
Formerly ECE-1510.
Course Outcomes

  1. Identify the major research methods and appropriate ways of assessing children’s behavior and development.
  2. Discuss the major theories of child development and how they apply to appropriate educational practices.
  3. Describe physical, cognitive, and social-emotional development of children from birth through adolescence.
  4. Identify practices that foster optimum development, birth through adolescence.
  5. Distinguish individual differences from common patterns in development.
  6. Explain the role of family, school, community, and culture in relation to the development of children.
  7. Identify ways teachers can foster physical, cognitive, and social-emotional development with individuals and groups of children.
