An introduction to the growth and development of children and adolescents. Emphasis is on physical, cognitive, and socio-emotional aspects of child development and techniques to foster optimum physical, cognitive, and socio-emotional development in educational settings. Prerequisite(s): Reading Readiness . Formerly ECE-1510. Course Outcomes
- Identify the major research methods and appropriate ways of assessing children’s behavior and development.
- Discuss the major theories of child development and how they apply to appropriate educational practices.
- Describe physical, cognitive, and social-emotional development of children from birth through adolescence.
- Identify practices that foster optimum development, birth through adolescence.
- Distinguish individual differences from common patterns in development.
- Explain the role of family, school, community, and culture in relation to the development of children.
- Identify ways teachers can foster physical, cognitive, and social-emotional development with individuals and groups of children.
