TED-2110 Infant and Toddler Curriculum and Teaching Credits 3 This course is an introduction to the strategies and developmentally appropriate practices necessary for developing a high quality infant and toddler program. Students plan developmentally appropriate units, lessons and activities for infants and toddlers in a variety of program settings. This course will also help students better understand the benefits of breastfeeding and how to support breastfeeding mothers. Additional topics include: developmental theories, caregiving practices, guidance techniques, play, culture, and communication. Prerequisite(s): TED-1300 and TED-1400 Formerly (ECE 1650) Course Outcomes
- Apply developmental and learning theories to each developmental domain in infants and toddlers.
- Discuss the implementation of developmentally appropriate practices for infants/toddlers in all developmental domains, and in the creation of a caregiving environment.
- Analyze current best practices of caregiving to infants and toddlers, including explaining the benefits of breastfeeding for both child and mother.
- Describe positive and effective guidance techniques to implement with infants and toddlers.
- Write lesson plans to enhance development of infants/toddlers in all developmental domains/content areas.
- Develop a unit that includes lessons in various developmental domains/content areas.
- Use types and stages of play and play behaviors to develop effective strategies for enhancing a child’s development through play.
- Examine how culture affects caregiving and childrearing practices in infants and toddlers, including sleep, eating, play, socialization, and attachment and separation.
- Describe effective communication techniques, which reflect cultural sensitivity, with children, families, other professionals, and the community.
