This course is an introduction to the field of special education, focusing on children from birth through third grade. Students explore the characteristics of young children with disabilities, developmentally appropriate materials, instructional strategies, guidance techniques, and accommodations to use in included settings.

Course Outcomes

Explain the major special education laws, their components and the implications these have for classroom practices.
List the characteristics of each disability group, as well as the causes, identification, tools, and impact on developmental growth.
Select appropriate teaching and guidance techniques and accommodations to use with young children in included settings.
Prepare a developmentally appropriate lesson plan which includes accommodations for children with disabilities in an included setting.
Choose appropriate types of support services/strategies for children with disabilities and their families.
Explain the roles of each member of the special education team and how the team collaborates in the special education process.
