TED-2400 Language Arts in Early Childhood Education


Credits 3
This course focuses on understanding the developmental progression of language development in young children, for both first and second language acquisition. Students also explore strategies for creating a language-rich environment which strengthens children’s emerging literacy skills. In addition, students learn to select strategies, methods, materials, and children’s literature for teaching young children pre-literacy and literacy skills and concepts in the areas of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Students also examine how to adapt the teaching of these areas for English Language Learners. Students plan developmentally appropriate literacy and pre-literacy units, lessons, and activities for young children in a variety of educational settings. Lastly, students examine observations and assessment methods related to literacy.

Course Outcomes
 

  1. Identify stages of language development in children ages birth through third grade, including first and second language acquisition.
  2. Examine how guiding the development of literacy differs for children who are native speakers versus those who are English Language Learners.
  3. Explain types of strategies which guide and promote children’s play in order to enhance language, and pre-literacy and literacy skills and concepts.
  4. Compare and contrast the various tools used for assessment and evaluation of literacy skills.
  5. Select strategies, activities, and materials/children’s literature for creating a language-rich environment for young children. 
  6. Select strategies, activities, and materials/children’s literature for reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills and concepts at each developmental stage. 
  7. Write developmentally appropriate lesson plans for pre-literacy and literacy skills and concepts. 
  8. Develop a unit plan that includes lessons in a variety of content areas, while incorporating developmentally appropriate literacy concepts and skills.
