TED-2800 Materials for Teaching Reading

Introduces students to a variety of materials to be used for the purposes of developing phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency. Students will learn to select and evaluate materials as well as utilize the expertise of parents and other members of the community to help fulfill goals of the reading program. This course is intended for those persons who have a bachelor’s degree and are seeking initial teacher certification and for teachers seeking recertification.

Course Outcomes

1. Recognize characteristics of narrative, expository, and functional text structures.
2. Explain how familiarity  with a variety of  text structures influences prior knowledge and children’s ability to read a variety of texts.
3. Select appropriate texts for reading instruction, literature response, and content reading by examining text quality and readability.
4. Implement a variety of instructional strategies to help students read texts written in the various structures.
5. Utilize a variety of response modes to help students respond to text of various structures.
6. Develop lesson plans that teach students to use their knowledge of text structure for both reading and writing in the various forms.
7. List the characteristics of each genre and plan lessons for teaching a specific genre.
8. Describe a comprehensive reading program that incorporates a variety of genre and structures.
9. Utilize specific instructional techniques in order to enhance phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, and reading fluency.
10. Develop classroom environments that foster motivation to write and read.
