TED-2901 Special Education Methods: Birth - 6th Grade

In this course, students will understand and use a variety of classroom methods and strategies appropriate for children with disabilities from birth to sixth grade. The focus will be on effective practices in a variety of settings with all disability groups, as well as collaboration with other involved professionals and parents.  This course is intended for those persons who have a bachelor’s degree and are seeking initial teacher certification and for teachers seeking recertification. 
Prerequisite(s): Departmental permission required.
Course Outcomes
 

  1. Explain how students with disabilities can be effectively taught and included in inclusive early childhood and/or elementary settings.
  2. Describe the Individualized Family Service Plan/Individualized Education Program (IFSP/IEP) development process for early childhood/elementary learners with disabilities.
  3. Examine how to plan instruction for inclusive settings, using appropriate goals and objectives
  4. Explain the strategies, methods, and interventions used for effective instruction in a variety of special education settings for children from Birth-6th grade, including accommodations, modifications, behavioral interventions, and assessments
  5. Describe appropriate strategies and interventions for content area skills for early childhood/elementary learners with disabilities
  6. Explain how to support students with disabilities and their families with transitioning to elementary and to middle school.
  7. Describe how to plan and collaborate with families and other professionals when working with early childhood/elementary learners with disabilities.
