TED-2901 Special Education Methods: Birth - 6th Grade Credits 3 In this course, students will understand and use a variety of classroom methods and strategies appropriate for children with disabilities from birth to sixth grade. The focus will be on effective practices in a variety of settings with all disability groups, as well as collaboration with other involved professionals and parents. This course is intended for those persons who have a bachelor’s degree and are seeking initial teacher certification and for teachers seeking recertification. Prerequisite(s): Departmental permission required. Course Outcomes
- Explain how students with disabilities can be effectively taught and included in inclusive early childhood and/or elementary settings.
- Describe the Individualized Family Service Plan/Individualized Education Program (IFSP/IEP) development process for early childhood/elementary learners with disabilities.
- Examine how to plan instruction for inclusive settings, using appropriate goals and objectives
- Explain the strategies, methods, and interventions used for effective instruction in a variety of special education settings for children from Birth-6th grade, including accommodations, modifications, behavioral interventions, and assessments
- Describe appropriate strategies and interventions for content area skills for early childhood/elementary learners with disabilities
- Explain how to support students with disabilities and their families with transitioning to elementary and to middle school.
- Describe how to plan and collaborate with families and other professionals when working with early childhood/elementary learners with disabilities.
