TED-2902 Special Education Methods: Grade 6 - Age 21

This course focuses on current practices in teaching students with disabilities in grades 6-12. Students will learn a variety of teaching techniques in the areas of functional skills, managing the learning environment, reading, writing, mathematics, and the content areas. Special focus is placed on transition education and services for adolescents. This course is intended for those persons who have a bachelor’s degree and are seeking initial teacher certification and for teachers seeking recertification. 
Prerequisite(s): Departmental permission required.

Course Outcomes
 

  1. Explain the legislation and services guidelines associated with secondary and transition education.
  2. Describe the available service models for comprehensive transition for secondary learners with disabilities.
  3. Explain the Individualized Education Program (IEP) and transition goal development process for secondary learners with special needs
  4. Describe appropriate strategies and interventions for content area skills instruction for secondary learners with disabilities, including accommodations and modifications.
  5. Describe instructional methods, strategies, accommodations, and modifications in basic and functional skills for secondary learners with disabilities.
  6. Describe effective methods of managing the classroom and learning environment for secondary learners with disabilities in a variety of settings.
  7. Explain how to support students with disabilities and their families with transitioning to middle school, high school, and post-high school.
  8. Describe how to plan and collaborate with families and other professionals when working with secondary learners with disabilities.
