TED-2951 Special Education Assessment Part II


Credits 3
This course fosters development of knowledge and skills in assessment, administration, interpretation, programming, and alignment of test data with teaching standards. Trends in informal assessment, vocational assessment, work sample analysis, task analysis, portfolios, and teacher-made tests will be explored. This course is intended for those persons who have a bachelor’s degree and are seeking initial teacher certification, and for teachers seeking recertification.

Course Outcomes
 

  1. Explain legal provisions, regulations, and guidelines regarding current practice in assessment of individuals with disabilities.
  2. Define basic terminology used in assessment.
  3. Identify appropriate use and limitations of each type of assessment instrument.
  4. Interpret assessment scores, including grade score versus standard score, percentile ranks, age/grade equivalents, and stanines.
  5. Use multiple types of assessment information for a variety of educational decisions including decisions in the areas of eligibility determination, Individualized Education Program (IEP) development, monitoring progress, instruction, adaptations in the classroom, and alignment with standards.
  6. Explain typical procedures used for screening, pre-referral, and determination.
  7. Describe the process and importance of collaboration to gather and interpret data from teachers, other professionals, individuals with disabilities, and parents to make or suggest appropriate adaptations in learning environments and instruction.
  8. Explain how to create and maintain assessment records for individual and groups of students.
  9. Explain strategies to collaborate with families and other professionals involved in the assessment of individuals with disabilities to assure culturally sensitive, non-biased, meaningful assessments and decision making.
