MUS-1410 Commercial Music Theory Credits 3 The student will learn to spell 7th, 9th, 11th, and 13th chords, and harmonize melodies using these chords. Analyze lead sheets and standard chord progressions, recognizing borrowed and substitute chords and demonstrate the understanding of chord to scale relationship. Will be able to aurally recognize chords and chord progressions and perform them on a keyboard. Prerequisite(s): MUS-1000 , minimum grade of “C” A placement may be given to determine the students’ level of theory knowledge. Course Outcomes
- Construct triads, seventh chords, and their extensions.
- Identify intervals, chords melodies and rhythm by ear.
- Construct melodies using a given chord progression
- Play simple chord progressions on the piano.
- Construct and play various scale types.
- Identify borrowed and substitute chords
- Demonstrate the use transposition of melody and chords.
- Analyze lead sheets.
